A gentleman, by Nathaniel Rogers, N.A., signed, circa 1815.  

Set in the original ‘rolled gold' locket frame with beaded bezel, the reverse with aperture containing a lock of hair.  The miniature is signed on the right edge.

Nathaniel Rogers (1787-1844) was, with Henry Inman, Samuel F. B. Morse and Thomas Seir Cummings, a founding member of the National Academy of Design.  Rogers was instructed by Anson Dickinson, Parmanes Howell and Uriah Brown before becoming an apprentice to Joseph Wood.   By 1813, Rogers had set up his own studio and was quickly one of the most successful artists in New York. According to Cummings he painted "most of the fashionables of his day."  A prolific artist, his delightful portraits may be seen in virtually every fine collection.
