Portrait miniature of John Denison Champlin by
Henry Colton Shumway, N.A., circa 1830.

Industrialist John Denison Champlin (1810-1897) of Stonington, CT, married Sylvia Bostwick of New Milford, CT in 1831. They had five children, including noted author John Dennison Champlin II. Champlin, who, when he died was the oldest living member of the 7th Regiment in New York City, was a friend of Henry Colton Shumway, who served as a Colonel in the same Regiment.

Set in a chased gilt metal pendant frame. 3 3/16 inches high.

Henry Colton Shumway, N.A., (1807-1854) was one of the last of the great American miniaturists, retiring from the art to serve as a colonel in the Civil War. His subjects included Henry Clay and Daniel Webster. Shumway arrived in New York from Middletown, Connecticut at the age of 21 to study at the National Academy of Design. He exhibited there from 1821-1861, and was elected an academician in 1832. William Dunlop placed him "in the foremost rank of miniature painters of New-York".
