A gentleman by Henry Williams,
signed, circa 1810.
This is an exceptionally strong example of Williams' work, possibly the finest I've seen.

Set in the original ‘rolled gold' locket frame with beaded bezel, the reverse with aperture containing plaited hair.
3 inches high.
Henry Williams (1787-1830), a native of Boston, and a man of varied talents, worked as an engraver, pastelist, profile cutter, wax modeler, portrait and miniature painter. He exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum from 1828-1831. Williams was the leading miniaturist in Boston in during the first quarter of the 19th century. Many signed and dated works are known. From 1807-1815, Williams was in partnership with William M. S. Doyle. During that time, several miniatures signed by both artists are recorded.
