The Comte is wearing the Prussian order of the Iron Cross.
Set in a gold pendant frame, the reverse engraved Comte de Luzé/ A. E. Chalon R.A./ 1780-1860. The portrait is signed on the obverse, in monogram, lower right AEC.R.A.2 inches (5 cm) high.
Alfred Edward Chalon, R.A. (1780-1860), painter in water-colour to Queen Victoria, exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1801-1860. Chalon, who was born in Geneva, studied at the Royal Academy Schools. In addition to miniatures, Chalon painted in oil and was a member of the Associated Artists in Water-Colours. His sitters included Princess Charlotte and the Duchess of Kent. Examples of Chalon's fine work are represented in the Victoria & Albert Museum, the British Museum, the National Portrait Gallery, London and the Royal Collection.
