A young boy of the Colepeper family,
 by William Egley, signed & dated 1836.

The miniature is set in the original ebonized wood frame, the hanger in the form of a falcon with wings inverted. This rare crest belongs to two branches of the Colepeper (Culpeper) family.  The miniature is signed on the backing paper: Painted by Wm Egley/ Buckingham Street/ Fitzroy Sq/ 1836.

2 ½ inches (6.4 cm) high.

William Egley (1798-1870) was a self-taught artist working in London.  Still, he succeeded in attracting an aristocratic clientele, exhibiting at the Royal Academy from 1824-1869.  Egley's charming works may be seen at the Victoria & Albert Museum, and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
