A ship's captain, by Fernel, signed, circa 1820.

Set in the original gilt wood frame with eglomise mat. It is signed on the window ledge "Fenel Pinxt."

4 1/4 inches high. Frame: 8 ½ inches high.

Fernel may be identical with John Fernell who worked in Liverpool from 1824-1839. The palm trees in the background would indicate that this portrait was painted in the colonies.
