A baby girl by Rupert Green, signed, circa 1795.

Green's works are exceedingly rare.  Mrs. Foskett lists only two, one of which is a child, signed Mr. R. Green/ Miniature Painter/ 15. Millmans Row/ Chelsea.  This may be that portrait.

Set in the original ebonized wood frame with acorn hanger.  The miniature is signed on the backing paper, Mr. R. Green/ Miniature Painter/ 15. Millmans Row/ Chelsea.

2 7/8 inches (7.3 cm) high.

Rupert Green (c.1768-1804), the son of engraver Valentine Green, began his career in partnership with his father.  In 1781, he won a premium at the Society of Artists.  Apparently not successful as either an engraver or miniaturist, Green, his wife and six children were supported by charity.  His works are scarce.
