Set in the original black turned wood frame. 3 5/8 inches (9.1 cm) high. David Paton (fl.1660-1695) was the finest of the very few 17th century Scottish miniaturists. Primarily producing highly finished, detailed portraits plumbago, Paton also painted in oil. With the exception of a Grand Tour trip to Italy in 1674 with the Hon. William Tollemache, Paton is not known to have worked outside of his native Scotland. His works may be seen in the Victoria & Albert Musuem and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. sold
