Two Children and their Spaniel,
by William Read, circa 1790.

William Read (fl 1778-1808) was first documented in detail by Donough O'Brien in his 1950 book Miniatures in the 18th and 19th Centuries.  In it O'Brien illustrates two signed examples.  When, in the 1987, Mrs. Foskett wrote the second version of her "Dictionary," those were still Read's only recorded signed works.  Since then, several examples have appeared and now his charming style is recognized.   Read exhibited only four miniatures during his lengthy career, three at the Royal Academy and one at the Society of Artists, all from addresses in London.

Set in a period turned wood frame.

2 1/8 inches (6.7 cm) high.
