Rosse was one of the earliest professional woman artists in England. Set in the original gold slide with fluted sides. The 1 3/16 inches (3 cm) high. Susan Penelope Rosse (c. 1652-1700) was the daughter and student of Richard Gibson, though her style shows the strong influence of Samuel Cooper, whose work she copied on several occasions. Described as ‘working with great finesse on an exceptionally small scale,' Rosse's portraits of the Duchess of Portsmouth and the Countess of Castlemaine (both, Foskett Collection) are each only one inch high. Her work is in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Duke of Buccleuch, and the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen.
