Charlotte Eden by Jeremiah
Steele,
inscribed, signed & dated 1804.
Charlotte Eden (b. 1785) of Ackland, St. Andrew, Durham was a daughter
of John Eden and Dorothea Johnson. In 1816, she married famed
botanist and mycologist Robert Kay Greville, an early leader of the
British Anti-Slavery Society. They lived, with their five children,
at 33 Georges Square, Edinburgh.
It is interesting to note how close this rare artist's work is to
the style of Adam Buck.
The oval miniature is signed
on the backing paper "Painted
by J. Steel/ 1804" and inscribed on a sheet of paper
on the reverse "Mifs Charlotte Eden/ Painted by J. Steele/ 1804".
The portrait is set in the original black wood frame with ormolu
mount.

Jeremiah Steele (c. 1780-after 1826) served as President of the Liverpool
Academy. In addition to Liverpool, Steele worked in Nottingham,
Bath and London, exhibiting at the Royal Academy from 1801-1826. A
portrait of him by fellow Liverpool Academy president, John Turmeau,
was exhibited there in 1808. A miniature by Steele is
in the collection of The Victoria & Albert Museum.
