Robert Fulton by John Turmeau,
signed, circa 1805.

Robert Fulton (1765-1815) who remains as famous today as he was during his lifetime, was celebrated as an inventor, artist, writer, canal designer, and dandy.

Set in an ebonized wood frame with gilt metal mount, the reverse with signature, "Fulton/ by Jno Turmeau".

3 3/4 inches (9.5 cm) high.

John Turmeau II (1777-1846) exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1793-1796, before moving to Liverpool. Turmeau, a founder of the Liverpool Academy, served as both President and Treasurer, exhibiting there annually until 1842. He painted portraits in watercolor and oil as well as in miniature. Turmeau's self-portrait is in the collection of the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.

It is likely that Turmeau and Fulton, who were working as artists in London at the same time, and were both in Liverpool shortly after, were acquainted.
