A young lady by George Chinnery, circa 1825.

This is an exceptionally beautiful example of this rare artist's work in India.

Set in a gilt metal pendant frame.

3 7/16 inches (8.7 cm) high.

George Chinnery (1774-1852) was "the last of truly national calibre to settle in India" according to Mildred Archer. Chinnery spent twenty three years there, first in Madras and then Calcutta, chronicling the lives of the British residents. Always only a step ahead of his creditors, in 1825 Chinnery settled in China, where he lived for the remaining twenty seven years of his life. Chinnery, who had exhibited great promise in London and Dublin before leaving for India in 1802, exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1791-1846. His sketches of life in India and China remain the most important visual documents of their time.
