Richard Crosse (1742-1810) Painter in Enamel to George III, was one of the finest miniaturists of 18th century England. Born a deaf-mute, Crosse turned to miniature painting as a hobby, but such was his talent that he won a premium at the Society of Artists. In 1758 he left for London to study at Shipley's Drawing School. Crosse exhibited at the Society of Artists, the Free Society of Artists and the Royal Academy from 1770-1796. His aristocratic clientele included the Prince of Wales and the Dukes of Cumberland and Gloucester.
