Edith Littledale Fletcher by Charles Turrell,
signed & dated 1887.

Edith Littledale (1848-1920), daughter of Thomas Littledale and Julia Royds, was born at Highfield House, West Derby, Lancashire. On 25 June, 1868, she married Alfred Fletcher (1841-1919) at St. Mary's West Derby. The couple, who had eight children, lived at Allerton Manor, Liverpool.

Set in the original gold locket frame decorated with blue and white enamels and beaded border, the glazed reverse revealing a lock of hair beneath a shield with the following inscription: Edith/ Wife of/ Alfred Fletcher/ Daughter of Thomas Littledale." The original oval hinged red leather easel display case remains. The portrait is signed lower right in white: CT/ 1887.

Charles James Turrell (1846-1932) who counted Queen Victoria, Queen Alexandra and Queen Maude of Norway among his sitters, exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Society of Miniaturists from 1873-1932. Equally as popular in America, Turrell often wintered in the States. There his patrons included the McCormick, Vanderbilt and Morgan families.
