signed, circa 1785.
Set in the original brightwork adorned gold
locket frame, the glazed reverse containing plaited hair.
1 ½ inches (4.5 cm) high.
Patrick McMor(e)land (1741-after 1809), artist and teacher, painted portraits
in enamel, watercolor on ivory and graphite. A native of Scotland, McMor(e)land
worked in Manchester, Liverpool and London, where he exhibited at the Royal
Academy and the Society of Artists. The New Orleans Museum of Art has a wonderful
collection of his portrait sketches.
