A gentleman by James Scouler, signed and dated 1796.
Set in the original gold pendant frame, signed on the side Scouler 1796. The backing paper, also dated, bears the warning "Paper must not be taken off/ 1796."

James Scouler (c.1740-1812), a native of Edinburgh, Scouler studied at the Duke of Richmond's Gallery and the St. Martin's Lane Academy. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1780-1787 and at the Society of Artists from 1761-1768. There are several examples of Scouler's works in the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. Mrs. Foskett places him "among the ranks of the great miniaturists."
