A gentleman, attributed
to Henry Spicer, F.S.A., circa 1780.
Set in the original
circular gold locket frame with gold mount set into Bristol glass,
the reverse
with magnificent hair work on a bed of Bristol glass
adorned with ribbons of seed pearls.
Additionally,
the miniature retains the original satin-lined red leather hinged
traveling case.
Dimensions: 1 3/4 inches (4.4 cm). Frame: 3 3/4 inches
in diameter.
Henry Spicer, F.S.A. (1743-1804) served as Painter in Enamel
to H.R. H. the Prince of Wales. Additionally, Spicer's
distinguished clientele included Lord Nelson, Sir Joshua Reynolds
and the Duke of Northumberland. Spicer, who studied with
Gervase Spencer, exhibited at the Society of Artists from 1765-1783
and the Royal Academy 1774-1804. Primarily an enamelist,
his works on ivory are rare.
