Charlotte Eden by Jeremiah Steele,
 inscribed, signed & dated 1804.

Charlotte Eden (b. 1785) of Ackland, St. Andrew, Durham was a daughter of John Eden and Dorothea Johnson.  In 1816, she married famed botanist and mycologist Robert Kay Greville, an early leader of the British Anti-Slavery Society.  They lived, with their five children, at 33 Georges Square, Edinburgh.   bdp-SteeleSignature
 
It is interesting to note how close this rare artist's work is to the style of Adam Buck. 

bdp-SteeleEdenInscriptionThe oval miniature is signed on the backing paper "Painted by J. Steel/ 1804" and inscribed on a sheet of paper on the reverse "Mifs Charlotte Eden/ Painted by J. Steele/ 1804". The portrait is set in the original black wood frame with ormolu mount.

Jeremiah Steele (c. 1780-after 1826) served as President of the Liverpool Academy.  In addition to Liverpool, Steele worked in Nottingham, Bath and London,  exhibiting at the Royal Academy from 1801-1826.  A portrait of him by fellow Liverpool Academy president, John Turmeau, was exhibited there in 1808.   A miniature by Steele is in the collection of The Victoria & Albert Museum.
