Charlotte Eden by
Jeremiah Steele,
inscribed, signed & dated 1804.
Charlotte Eden (b. 1785) of Ackland,
St. Andrew, Durham was a daughter of John Eden and Dorothea Johnson. In
1816, she married famed botanist and mycologist Robert Kay Greville,
an early leader of the British Anti-Slavery Society. They
lived, with their five children, at 33 Georges Square, Edinburgh.
It is interesting to note how close this rare artist's work is to the style
of Adam Buck.
The oval miniature is signed on
the backing paper "Painted by J. Steel/ 1804" and
inscribed on a sheet of paper on the reverse "Mifs Charlotte
Eden/ Painted by J. Steele/ 1804". The portrait is set
in
the original black wood frame with ormolu mount.
3 inches 7.9 cm) high.
Jeremiah Steele (c. 1780-after 1826) served as President of the Liverpool
Academy. In addition to Liverpool, Steele worked in Nottingham, Bath
and London, exhibiting at the Royal Academy from 1801-1826. A
portrait of him by fellow Liverpool Academy president, John Turmeau, was
exhibited there in 1808. A miniature by Steele is in the collection
of The Victoria & Albert Museum.
