 attributed to Jacques Antoine Arlaud,
on vellum, circa 1700.

Set in an ornate ormolu frame with shield surmount, the reverse glazed to reveal sitter identification.


4 7/8 inches (12.3 cm) high.

Jacques Antoine Arlaud (1668-1746), a native of Geneva, Arlaud studied there before moving to Paris in 1688. Quickly finding success, Arlaud became painter to the Prince Regent and was housed in the chateau of St. Cloud. The same enthusiastic reception greeted Arlaud's arrival in London, where he worked from 1721-1729 before returning to Geneva. Examples of his work are in the Royal Collection, Windsor and the Victoria & Albert Museum.
