Jean Urbain Guérin (1760-1836), a favorite of Marie-Antoinette, was one of the finest miniaturists of his time. Banished for his political views, Guérin returned to Paris during the Consulate, quickly gaining the recognition of Napoleon, whose portrait he exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1812. Guérin's miniature of General Kléber, considered one of the great masterpieces of the miniature art, is in the collection of the Louvre.
