This strong portrait was likely painted during Stroely's visit to Vienna in 1795/1796.

Set in the original gilt metal mount, signed lower right Stroely.

Peter Edward Stroely (1768-after 1826) a native of Dusseldorf, worked in Germany, Paris, Rome, Vienna and St. Petersburg. He was such a success with the aristocracy in Russia that he remained for five years before moving on to London. Stroely was in demand everywhere he worked, with a clientele that included Queen Louise of Prussia, Marie Antoinette, Grand Duke Nicolas Mikhailowitsch, and Sir Walter Scott. Stroely exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1803-1826. A favorite of George IV, he served as Historical Painter to the Prince Regent from 1810-20.
