Caroline Polyxena, (1762-1823) was a daughter of Charles William, Prince of Nassau-Usingen. She married Frederick III von Hessen-Cassel, Landgrave of Hesse-Cassel, a grandson of George II of England. Their youngest child, Augusta Wilhelmina Louisa, Princess of Hesse-Cassel (1797-1889) married her British cousin Prince Adolphus Frederick, 1st Duke of Cambridge (1774-1850) in 1818. This portrait descended in the Cambridge family.

Set in the original leather traveling case with gilt metal mount. 3 1/4 inches (8.2 cm) high. The case retains the St. James's Palace inventory label for 1889.

Christian Wilhelm Unger (1775-1855), was the nephew and student of Johann and Heinrich Wilhelm Tishbein. Additionally, he studied in Paris with Isabey, exhibiting at the Salon 1812-1814. In 1817, Unger was appointed Painter to the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg Strelitz. His aristocratic clientele included Adelheid, Grand Duchess of Oldenburg and Ida, Princess of Hanover. Unger's works are scarce.
